Learning in Oak Class

Welcome to Oak Class!  Mrs Lancaster is the class teacher Tuesday to Friday and Mr Lewis teaches the class on a Monday.  Our TA is Mrs Davis.

We are encouraged to always be kind and to respect each other, as well as to always have a positive approach to our learning and do our very best.

Homework is given out on a Thursday and due in the following Thursday.  It consists of Reading, Spelling, Times Tables and Maths, linking in to our learning in class. In the second half of the term the children will be encouraged to create a project linked to our topic of Bridges. Details of the project will be given to the children later in the term.

We follow the Twinkl Spelling scheme and learn a different rule each week.  Our spelling tests are on a Thursday.

Oak Class will be going to Forest School for a few sessions in the second half of this term, led by Mr Lewis on a Monday afternoon.

PE this term will be on a Friday afternoon. This term’s focus will be on Rounders and Athletics.

Information for Summer Term 2026

English

We will begin the term by finishing reading our class text of Hetty Feather which links in with our studies of the Victorians. We will then read the book Born to Run by Michael Morpurgo followed by the book Holes by Louis Sachar. We will be covering several genres of writing this term including writing instructions, a balanced argument, a biography about Michael Morpurgo, descriptions of bridges, non-fiction writing and narrative writing.

Children are regularly taught punctuation and grammar skills and are encouraged to use these skills accurately in their written work.

Developing a love of reading is so important. Children are given the opportunity to read at school daily, both individually and with reading buddies. In addition, Mrs Lancaster reads to the children every day.

Comprehension work is completed every week with Mr Lewis. Children read and analyse a range of texts and answer questions, further developing their deduction and inferential skills.

Maths

We follow the Hamilton Trust scheme of work for Maths.

This term we will be focussing on consolidation and revision of all topics in Maths covered so far this year, as well as lots of fun maths investigations and practical maths such as money and measuring.

Quick recall of times tables facts is so important and children are encouraged to practise regularly at home.

Science

We will begin the term by finishing off our topic of Properties of Materials before moving onto topics on Light and Electricity. Much of our work will be taught through fun and engaging experiments where we will first hypothesise, then experiment, before finally discussing our results and drawing conclusions.

Humanities

In History, we will begin the term by completing our studies of the Victorian era. We will continue exploring the expansion of the British Empire and the Industrial Revolution. Also, we will research famous Victorians and find out about life for children in Victorian times and the differences between rich and poor. Some of our learning will be linked to Art and DT.

In Geography, we will use our mapping skills to locate famous bridges around the world while at the same time exploring the structure of bridges, and why they are so important. In addition, we will be improving our mapping skills using Ordnance Survey maps, revisiting the eight points of a compass and using four and six-figure grid references to locate places and features.

Our two topics in RE this term are “Why is faith important when life is hard?” and “What kind of King was Jesus?”. Much of our RE will be learnt through class discussions.

Art and DT

Much of our Art and DT will be linked to our topics in Humanities. Some of our projects this term include: cooking some Victorian food, creating some Victorian toys, designing and printing patterns inspired by William Morris, creating art inspired by the work of Claude Monet and building bridges with different structures.

Computing

This term's topics are Creating Media - Webpage Creation and Programming B - Variables in Games. Computing will be taught by Mr Lewis on a Monday afternoon. We will also be focussing on Managing Online Information, Privacy and Security and Copyright and Ownership.

French

We will begin the term with the topic of “All in a Day” and then move on to the topic of “Our Precious Planet”.

Included in our PSHE lessons is our Values Education. The Values for this term are:

April - Generosity

May - Truthfulness

June - Commitment

July - Friendliness

Year 6 will be learning about Relationships, How a Baby is Made and How a Baby is Born as part of their Sex and Relationship Education.
